Welcome

Happy New Year from Chrissy Derbyshire!

I am a writer, folklorist, storyteller and singer. I write stories and poetry, the odd song here and there, and I also write about myths, legends, folktales and fairy tales. Sometimes people ask me to talk about them at events such as the Mercian Gathering.

Most recently, one of my stories, ‘Sovay, Sovay’, has been featured in the new Honno Press anthology The Wish Dog and Other Stories: Haunting Tales from Welsh Women Writers. It has been named the WH Smith, Waterstones, Wales National Museums and Galleries and Wales Independent Bookshops book of the month for October 2014.

Also, my stories ‘Absinthe’ and ‘The Woodcutter’ have both been selected for the upcoming TV program Fragments of Fear – a kind of adult horror take on Jackanory. I’m honoured to say that cult horror actress Francoise Pascal (The Iron Rose) will be reading ‘Absinthe’. Fragments of Fear is filming now and is set to air in Brighton in December. It will then be available online.

When I was about 10, I read a collection of short stories by Joan Aiken. It wasn’t my book, and I’ve never found another copy, and I’ve missed the mixed feelings that the book gave me… sad-happy, at home in strangeness. Your book made me feel the same way as that one from long ago… ready to answer the call of the mermaids and dance with the moon.
I was also lucky enough to be present at one of your story-tellings. Your audience was enchanted and spellbound… in the true senses of the words. You wove an enchantment around us and bound us with the spell of your voice and the tale. I hope to be in your audience again sometime.
